Day 4: Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (2700m) and Trek to Kagbeni (2858m) - 4 Hours

Today, we will begin our trek after flying to the beautiful Jomsom. We will fly northwest from Pokhara towards the gateway between the snow-clad mountains of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The towering massifs of over 8000 meters and the deep gorges along the way are sure to give travelers chills. Our trek starts from Jomsom, and we will start from the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. After a couple of hours’ trek, we will reach Ekle Bhatti, and an hour later, we will arrive at Kagbeni. Kagbeni is an interesting village situated on the ancient trade route to Tibet and also serves as the entry point to the restricted Upper Mustang Trekking. Kali Gandaki is formed by the confluence of the Mustang River and the Kak River, two small rivers. This clustered village also has ancient monasteries. We will be staying overnight in Kagbeni.

Day 5: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele (3050m) - 6 Hours

We will continue our journey from Kagbeni and pass through the settlements of Tangbe and Chhusang before reaching the Tibetan culture-dominated Chele village. We will travel towards the east bank of the Kali Gandaki River, traverse over ridges towards the north, and finally arrive at Tangbe village. This village is characterized by its complex trails among whitewashed settlements, farmlands, and apple orchards, all overlooked by the Nilgiri Mountain. After Tangbe, we will continue to Chhusang village, cross the river, and then move out of the Kali Gandaki valley to reach Chele village. This marks the transition from the influence of Manangi culture to the Tibetan culture of Lo. We will be staying overnight in Chele.

Day 6: Trek from Chele to Syangboche (3475m) - 7 Hours

Starting from the village of Chele, we ascend steeply westwards, opposite the village of Ghyakar, following the deep canyon and turning right along the gorge. Along the rocky trail, past a steep descent on some sections, we reach the top of the pass, with a view of the Kali Gandaki River, mountains in the distance, and the village of Samar. Descending from the pass and past a creek, we reach a red-painted cave monastery known as the Rangchyung Chorten. This monastery is believed to have hosted the famed Buddhist saints Padmasambhava and Atisha centuries ago. Passing through forests and gorges with high vertical walls, we come to an area where there are walls with temporary homes for herders. Continuing with a constant and relatively easy climb, we reach Syanbochen, a village with a cluster of homes where we will spend the night.

Day 7: Trek from Syangboche to Ghaymi (3520m) - 6 Hours

Morning's hike to Mustang's longest Mani wall, complete with carvings, a collection of Chortens that mark the end of this valley. Legend has it Guru Rinpoche defeated a demon here; remnants mark the key sites including the Mani wall. We climb, reaching a pass, cross barren lands to Tsarang Chorten and palace. Overnight stay in Tsarang Charang, the 14th-century capital of Lo kingdom, our historical richness soaring in the night.

Day 8: Trek from Ghaymi to Charang (3500m) - 5 Hours

Today we shall have a shorter trekking journey as compared to the previous day. We start with paying a visit to Mustang’s longest Mani wall, adorned with carvings, accompanied by the group of Chortens that mark the end of the valley. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche destroyed a demon whose intestine landed at the present location of the Mani wall, its lungs near the red cliffs behind, and its heart at the spot of the current Lo Gekar monastery, the oldest monastery in Mustang. We ascend gradually up to a pass and move ahead through barren lands to reach Tsarang Chorten and the palace of Tsarang. Along the broad road, we reach the destination of today’s overnight stay, the settlement of Tsarang (Charang). Tsarang was the capital of the ancient Lo kingdom in the 14th century. Overnight in Charang.

Day 9: Trek from Charang to Lo-Manthang (3700m) - 6 Hours

Our destination today is the famous settlement of Lo Manthang. We begin by passing through the Caharang Chu canyon and then climb steeply after crossing the river, leaving the palace and gompas behind. We trek for a few hours through barren lands, past the ruins of ancient fortresses and monasteries, until we reach the famed walls of Lo Manthang after crossing the windy pass of Lo. Trekking along the southern walls of the city, we reach a small bridge and enter the closely guarded town. This walled city is the residence of King Jigme Palbar Bista, and his four-storied palace lies within the city walls. Lo Manthang has an ancient legacy, as it has been ruled by the dynasty of the Mustang region for ages, and it neighbors the Tibetan border. We will spend the night in Lo-Mangthang.

Day 10: Acclimatization at Lo-Manthang

Lo-Mangthang, a culturally rich settlement since the 14th century, captivates with its ancient architecture and vibrant traditions. Enclosed by fortified walls, it hosts significant shrines like the brick-red Jampa Lhakhang, the oldest gompa in Mustang, alongside a monumental 50-foot clay Buddha and the historic Thubchen Gompa. The Royal Palace of the Mustangi King offers insights into local lifestyles and values. Notable attractions include the imposing Champa Lakhang, vivid Thugchen Gompa, and the serene Nyhu Gompa in Chosar. Beyond cultural landmarks, the area features ancient cave dwellings at Jhong Cave and the scenic Nyamdo Gompa in Namgyal village. Lo-Mangthang's white-washed villages, ancient fortress ruins, and the majestic palace of the Mustangi King further enhance its historical charm. Tonight, we rest within this enchanting valley, continuing our exploration of its rich heritage and natural beauty.

Day 11: Trek from Lo-Manthang to Drakmar (3810m) - 7 Hours

Enriched with the unique Lo-Mangthang walled city, we set out on a different route for a retrace to Chogo La pass, having a hard uphill climb. Then the trail eases up, leading us downstream to our overnight camp in Drakmar. On the way, we will stop by Ghar Gumba, famous for its beautiful rock paintings and sacred prayers by the locals. Now refreshed, with renewed energies, we start the trek for a few more hours to Drakmar, where the night will be spent

Day 12: Trek from Drakmar to Ghiling (3806m) - 6 Hours

The program is midway through our trekking expedition. We view reaching Ghiling at the end of 5-6 hours of walking upfront. Since afternoons are normally windy, the best time to explore Ghiling is in the evening. The trek to Ghiling is filled with encounters of villages, stunning Chortens, monasteries, and breathtaking landscapes. Overnight in Ghiling.

Day 13: Trek from Ghiling to Chhuksang (3050m) - 6 Hours

The next day continues our journey toward the conclusion of this backpacking adventure through unique and desert-like landscapes sprinkled with cultural heritage and majestic mountains. On the way, we make a stop in the village of Chhuksang, offering breathtaking Himalayan vistas, varied scenery, and locals who show their resilience and hospitality along the trail. We spend the night in Chhuksang and recount experiences that have enriched our trekking journey.

Day 14: Trek from Chhuksang to Jomsom (2700m) - 7 Hours

This is the last stretch of our journey and a relatively longer and physically challenging walk, setting off early towards Kagbeni. The Upper Mustang trail meets with the Annapurna Circuit, which ends in Kagbeni—a beautiful medieval village aptly titled the Gateway to the Kingdom of Mustang, still evoking its medieval charm. From Kagbeni, we rest before pushing on to the beautiful Jomsom, which happens to be the district headquarters of Mustang. The town can boast of hospitals, an airport, excellent hotels, good food, and views of Mount Nilgiri, everything a tourist could want. Tonight we rest in Jomsom and rethink the experiences on the treks before culminating it.

Day 15: Fly Back to Pokhara

This morning we bid a fond farewell to this beautiful Mustang, following an unforgettable trekking experience. A short flight from Jomsom brings us to the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara, full of colorful life.
