Central Zoo
The Central Zoo, situated in Jawalakhel, just 2 km away from the ancient city of Patan, is a must-visit destination for animal lovers in Nepal. This is the only zoo in the country and was established as a private zoo in 1932 by the then Prime Minister Juddha Shumser. However, it was later converted to a public zoo in 1956. Over the years, the zoo has witnessed the addition of various animal species, and presently, it houses around 870 animals belonging to 109 species, with 38 of them being endangered local species.
The main attractions of the Central Zoo are the Royal Bengal tigers and one-horned Rhinoceros, which draw large crowds of tourists. Additionally, visitors can also enjoy a small fun park for children, a man-made lake where paddle boating is available, and ample space for picnicking within the complex. The zoo is open from Saturday to Sunday, with timings of 10 AM to 5 PM during summers and 10 AM to 4 PM during winters. Visitors must purchase entrance tickets from the main entrance ticket counter.
